Micro-HydroElectric
Power The Micro-Hydro Centre has been carrying out research
into low-cost equipment for small-scale hydro-electric plants
since 1985. In particular, they have identified an induction
motor used as a stand-alone generator provides good reliability
at low cost. They are also researching the use of cheap, readily
available standard pumps as turbines. For very low-head sites,
work is being undertaken to design a low-cost turbine suitable
for local manufacture in developing countries.
