The Botner residence is a crescent-shaped,
passive solar, straw-bale home far from the power lines –
but close to the beautiful South Yuba River. The owner is building
a retreat - literally - in a beautiful place “away from
it all.” The cost to bring in utility power was prohibitive,
so they asked the people at Plan It Solar for a solution.We asked
Eric Botner, the property owner, how things were going after he
had been living with the solar electric system for a little while.
“It’s great, it’s awesome!” he said enthusiastically.
“If anything, I’m surprised how efficiently we’re
running. We’re completely relying on the sun out here.”
Eric deserves a lot of credit for his ability to disconnect from
the grid - the success of his system has benefited greatly from
the wise selection of lighting and appliances.An excellent solar
site was chosen, with direct sun available from dusk to dawn (below),
dramatically increasing electricity generation.
