How Solar Hot
Water (SHW) Works When
Connected to an Existing Water Heating Unit
There are 3 main components
to a solar water heating system:
Solar Panels
– Usually referred to as collectors. SHW collectors come
in sizes from 6’x3’ to 10’x4’ and are
3” tall. (Our photo shows two 4’x8’s.)
Mounting Rack –
This is a metal support structure that holds an array of SHW
collectors on the roof facing the sun, sometimes tilted at an
angle.
Tank
– SHW collectors allow the sun to heat a fluid that exchanges
its heat with the home water. The heat exchange occurs in an
insulated tank located above the SHW collectors that preheats
water before it enters the regular water tank. (Our photo shows
an 80-gallon tank.)Water heating bills can be reduced every
time the sun shines.
White House
Goes Solar!
In August of 2002, the White House had two separate SunEarth
solar hot water systems installed. One system heats the pool
and spa and another system provides domestic hot water. At the
same time, 167 Evergreen solar electric panels were installed
and are feeding back electricity through the White House utility
meter. Both of the 2002 White House solar installations were
initiated by the National Park Service. For more info on other
